What Is Asbestos And Why Is It Dangerous For Your Health

If you’re a homeowner and you’ve been hearing about this material called “asbestos”, then you probably know that it’s not the most benign material to deal with either. Asbestos is a term used to describe heat-resistant fibrous silicate minerals woven into fabrics and insulating materials.

Basically, it’s part of what makes your house a more comfortable place to live in, and it’s usually found inside drywall, lead, plaster, cement, insulation, flooring and many other heat-resistant materials. Asbestos is extremely toxic, and it most commonly causes a very aggressive type of cancer called Mesothelioma.

Asbestos is found in most houses that were built prior to the 1990s, and a good example of how dangerous it can be is the spike in mesothelioma patients that occurred when the Twin Towers collapsed on September the 11th, 2001. The buildings released 400 tons of asbestos in the air. Asbestos can also take a couple of decades to show up.

What You Should Know About Asbestos

The materials which contain asbestos silicate minerals have been used for centuries, and the heat-resistant properties of asbestos were discovered thousands of years ago. It’s a naturally occurring mineral that helped humanity become more and more civilized with time. But no one knew of the dangers of it once airborne.

However, the severity of asbestos-related diseases is extreme. Asbestos was banned from industrial use in 1989, but the repercussions of it being widely used in home and commercial construction are still present to this day and they cannot be ignored, especially if you are a homeowner or a commercial building owner.

Asbestos fibers are extremely thin, and once you inhale them, they can get stuck deep in your lungs like tiny hooks.
Asbestos is most dangerous once it is airborne. This means that while your home might make use of asbestos, it is not necessarily dangerous to live in it unless you want to renovate or demolish; simply call a qualified professional when wanting to do any renovations or demolition of a home or commercial building.

When Does Asbestos Become Dangerous?
Asbestos becomes most dangerous for your health when you decide to complete any kind of renovation like tearing down a wall or renovation on your bathroom to a full demolition.
While it is best to get rid of households which make excessive use of asbestos by demolishing them via the services of experienced companies like CC Enviro, it’s true that not everybody can afford to do that.
It is basically impossible to tell whether a floor or a ceiling tile contains asbestos just by looking at them, so it’s important to test materials before any sort of renovations. Always ask professionals like CC Enviro to do that on your behalf! Do not disturb any materials or tiles that are known to contain asbestos.
You should never drill, hammer, break, move or disturb any asbestos containing material, and check with your local organizations to understand what can be done. The most important is to always keep an eye out for any broken tiles and swiftly contact someone if you believe it could contain asbestos.
